Q: What is the difference between Aureleon and Aurelia Reporter?
A: Aurelia Reporter is the latest upgrade to the original Aureleon HTML printer driver. It includes an updated Aureleon printer driver as well as a convenient desktop interface to the driver (and it costs the same). Aureleon only included the printer driver. If you still want the original Aureleon HTML printer driver without the desktop interface and new features, you may download it here.

Q: What types of applications are supported by Reporter?
A: Under Windows 95/98/ME, Reporter works with any application that supports printing, including Windows 3.x applications. Reporter will not extract text information from programs that print text as graphics (i.e. MS Paint). The output from these applications will consist of a single, large, graphic image. Under Windows NT4/2000/XP, Reporter will work with any application that allows EMF spooling. If unsure, then please feel free to download the demo and try it with your applications.

Q: Why would I use Reporter when the programs I use already allow me to save as HTML?
A: Except in the case of very simple documents, applications that allow you to save as a web page typically do a very poor job of retaining the original document layout. For example, here's the HTML rendition of our MS-Word sample as created by Office 2000 professional edition, compared with the Reporter version.

Q: What browsers are supported by Reporter?
A: Reporter works with versions 4 and higher of Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera Software's Opera browser, and any other browser that supports the required minimum subset of HTML/CSS. At the time of this writing these browsers comprise roughly 99% of worldwide browser usage. Since Reporter uses only generic, nonproprietary tags, Reporter output will be compatible with all future browsers that support the HTML/CSS standard as defined by the W3C.

Q: What about unsupported browsers?
A: Unsupported browsers, including earlier versions of the aforementioned browsers, Web TV, etc., may be unable to display some or all of the graphics and will display document text as unformatted paragraphs which, depending upon the complexity of the document, may render it unreadable.

Q: What mail clients does it support?
A: Reporter contains its own built-in mail client so it doesn't need an external mail client to send HTML e-mail, however it can use your Outlook, Outlook Express, or Eudora mail client if available.

Q: What mail clients understand Reporter's HTML e-mails?
A: The same rules apply with Reporter as with any HTML e-mail: As of this time not all mail clients can properly display HTML e-mail. With that said however, Reporter's HTML e-mail has been successfully tested against Outlook 98, Outlook Express 5.0, AOL 6.0, Eudora 4.3, and Netscape Messenger 4.x. It is not however compatible with earlier versions of Outlook or Outlook Express as these mail clients do not support HTML, nor is it compatible with web-based mail services such as Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

Q: Is there a way to generate a single output file?
A: Yes. Reporter has built-in compression support and can generate both Zip files and self-extracting executables.

Q: What fonts are supported?
A: Reporter will let you use any fonts you want. Reporter includes a user-editable list of "standard fonts" that are assumed to be available on all browser platforms. Fonts not on the list can be either rasterized (turned into images), or embedded in the web document, in which case Reporter produces embedded font objects that can be downloaded by the browser if the fonts are unavailable on the browser's platform.

Q: What graphic types are supported?
A: Simple line-art and geometric shapes are stored in the widely supported Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format since this works extremely well for simple, high-contrast images. Photographic images are stored in JPEG format since this works better for high-color images.

Q: How are multi-page documents handled?
A: Pages can be either concatenated into a single, long, HTML document or rendered into separate HTML pages, in which case Reporter generates Next/Previous links allowing the user to move from page to page.

Q: What about indexing?
Reporter can automatically generate a table of contents from chapter or section headings that you mark with special delimiters. The various indexing modes can be combined with any of the pagination options to produce a total of nine different web document styles.

Q: Can you create links with it?
A: Yes. If your document contains text of the form myname@mycompany.com, www.mycompany.com, http://www.mycompany.com, etc. Reporter can convert these into clickable hyperlinks that will appear highlighted in the web document. Note: Reporter cannot detect application-specific links such as a link made in an MS-Word document.

Q: What type of output does it produce? Does it just make a big graphic of the document?
A: No, Reporter produces compact HTML Text and graphic files thereby assuring quick download times.

Q: Can it be used over a network?
A: No, it can only be used by the interactive user who is currently logged on to the workstation upon which it is installed.

Q: Is there a way to shut off the settings dialog that comes up each time I convert a document? I want to convert a group of files without having to enter settings for each file.
A: Yes, Reporter can be run in batch mode in which case it will convert documents according to your saved settings with no user intervention.

Q: Can I run Reporter from an application?
A: Yes, Reporter supports a powerful command line interface that allows you to set most things programmatically, so it can be used with any programming language that lets you spawn DOS style command lines. See the overview for an example of how this works.

Q: Can I ship Reporter with my own products?
A: Yes, we offer a special OEM version and licensing package that allows software vendors to seamlessly integrate Reporter's capabilities into their own products.
